How to Install SSL Certificate on a WordPress Website?

When you need to change all the URLs of your Wordpress website from HTTP to HTTPS, you need to first install a SSL certificate.

But why do you need to switch your website URLs to HTTPS?

It is for security purpose.

It is for better search engine optimization of your Wordpress website. This is explained in this Mobile SEO Best Practices guide.

You may actually buy a SSL certificate for your website.

Or you can download and install a free SSL certificate.

There are a lot of free SSL certificate providers out there. For free certificates, you may use SSLforFree, LetsEncrypt, or other free certificates that you believe would work for your Wordpress website.

Assume you prefer SSLforFree.

Assume you are to host your Wordpress website on GoDaddy (web hosting service).

Login to GoDaddy and your cPanel.

Go to File Manager. Go to Public.html. Create a new folder.

Upload your choice of certificate (which is *.crt files).

The installation of the SSL certificate normally would not take more than a few hours.

To verify if the installation of your SSL certificate has been successful or not, check the status in the web hosting account.

You can also visit the HTTPS version of your website. This is a much more direct approach.

If your website can load up properly without error, it means the HTTPS version works, and the SSL certificate has been correctly installed.

If you see warning about the certificate not being valid, then the SSL is not installed.

Back to home.
